THE STROOP EFFECT

A deceptively simple series of artworks in neon.

Say the colour you first see.

Was it verbal or visual?

Feel a little glitch in your processing?

A twitch twixt eye & brain?

A stut-utter ‘tween brain & mouth?

That is ‘The Stroop Effect.’

This series is derives from the scientist Ridley J Stroop who conducted experiments in cognitive processing in the 1930’s.

He asked people to name the colour of lists of words (e.g. ‘Red’) printed with incongruent colours (e.g.‘Blue’).

People stumbled, misfired, misappropriated.

Because it seems words are processed quicker than colour, we do it automatically.

The intention behind the pieces was simply to present viewers with an artwork they could happily view as a simple decoration…..at first glance.

Those that paused long enough to register something a little amiss…

they might appreciate the light provocation their brain was given.

Failing that… well, each is a tad more interesting than an Ikea wall lamp.
